I’ve just learned that there is website called Welcome Home Blog that has daily videos of military homecoming. Sure, it’s probably impossible to have a military homecoming video that isn’t wonderful, but this one’s a little different. In it, the returning soldiers are greeted by their dogs who welcomes them home with all the excitement one would normally expect from the more human members of the family.

A friend of mine sent these pictures.  It’s so touching, I had to put it on this blog.

Lily is a Great Dane that has been blind since a bizarre medical condition required that she have both eyes removed. For the last 5 years, Maddison, another Great Dane, has been her sight.

The two are, of course, inseparable.

Here’s my latest video that I just made in Loomis, CA.  I just bought a new Sony DSC Hx100v camera and this is the first video with it. It’s a great camera that not only takes pictures but also takes video in high definition.

The geese comes to my girlfriend’s backyard every morning this time of the year. She has two and one-half acres, most of it in grass, which geese love to eat. Plus there are fruit trees and when the fruit falls off the trees they are right there to clean up.

Here we have the world’s smallest dog (might be the shortest too) and the world’s tallest  dog.  Of course this was all created by humans breeding dogs over the ages.

A Great Dane from the US state of Arizona has been officially recognised by Guinness World Records as the tallest dog ever on record.Giant George, owned by David Nasser, stands 43in (1.09m) tall paw to shoulder, and weighs 245lb (111kg). Guinness officials say there were conflicting reports about Giant George’s height, so they sent a judge to his home in Tucson to verify it.

Giant George – who has his own website – consumes 110lb of food each month.

Four-year-old Giant George made it into the record books by beating his nearest rival, Titan, a Great Dane from California, by three-quarters of an inch.

He was named by Guinness World Records as both the world’s Tallest Living Dog and Tallest Dog Ever.

Mr Nasser says George sleeps on his own queen-sized bed inside the house.

On a recent plane trip for a media appearance in Chicago, George was given a row of three seats to himself.

And his presence on the plane certainly caused a commotion, says Mr Nasser, with many passengers coming up to take photographs.

“There were so many people coming to the front of the plane, the pilot ended up illuminating the ‘fasten seat-belt’ sign to get everyone to sit down,” he added.

This is a video that brought tears to my eyes. The use  of fishing nets kills thousands of innocent dolphins, whales and fish every year.  At least this whale was saved from a horrible death. This video has had over 2,300,000 views on YouTube.

Ah, spring! The weather is warming up, it’s green everywhere you look, and the animal shelter is bursting with puppies and kittens.

They’re so cute! Who doesn’t love warm, fuzzy puppies and kittens? It’s positively un-American not to love puppies and kittens!

The problem with puppies and kittens isn’t that they aren’t inherently delightful; it’s that we have way too many of them. While the Nevada County Animal Shelter is a remarkable example of a nearly-no-kill shelter, the national statistics on euthanasia are shocking and too depressing for me to quote here. Let’s just say that any joy a mommy cat or dog could possibly feel at the birth of her children would be completely obliterated if she could know the overwhelming odds that her children would soon end up dead.

What are the arguments in favor of letting your cat or dog have babies? Let’s see…

“It would be nice for her to have babies once.”

“It’ll be a learning experience for my children.”

“I always find homes for them!”

To confront these silly arguments one at a time: cats and dogs won’t care if they never have children. They lack the pre-frontal cortex of the human brain, where long-term goals reside. Animals don’t dream of being surrounded by grand-puppies and grand-kittens in their golden years. That’s a purely human trait.

You want a learning experience for your children? Take them to the animal shelter and show them all the doggies and kitties no one wants. Tell them what will happen to them, and that this is because some people don’t spay and neuter their pets.

So you always find homes for them. Okay, suppose you find nice homes for those four adorable kittens or seven precious pups. That’s four kittens or seven puppies already at the shelter who will now be euthanized, thanks to all those people who let their pets reproduce.

Unless you’re a licensed breeder, you have no business letting your pets reproduce. If you don’t know where to go or need financial help, contact the Nevada County Animal Shelter or any of the local rescue groups, including AnimalSave, Sammie’s Friends, and Scooter’s Pals.

No more unwanted puppies and kittens!
