Debby Biddinger was recently named the 2013 Blue Ribbon Award recipient by the Nevada County Fairgrounds Board of Directors. The award was created by the Fair’s industry association, the Western Fairs Association (WFA), to recognize dedicated individuals who support their local Fair and continuously contribute to the quality of the Fair. Debby was recognized for her ongoing support of the Fairgrounds and its many activities, and for all her work at Tall Pines Nursery School at the Fairgrounds.

Debby has been the director of Tall Pines Nursery, a parent co-op preschool located at the Nevada County Fairgrounds, since 1985. She has also served as a teacher during this time and has become affectionately known as “Teacher Debby.”  During her 28 years at Tall Pines, Debby has seen almost 3,000 children pass through the preschool, and now has some families with three generations who have attended the school.

During the Fair, the preschool is closed; however, Debby can be found at the Fairgrounds getting the Tall Pines Nursery booth ready for the Fair, where they serve Round Table Pizza to Fair-goers as a fundraiser for the school.

Raised in Nevada County, Debby has been married to her husband, Tim, for 36 years, and they have a daughter, Amy. Throughout her years at the preschool, Debby has recruited both her husband and her daughter to help out at the preschool. To them, it’s “definitely a family event.” Their daughter, Amy, has followed in her Mom’s footsteps and is now a math teacher at Forest Charter.

“I truly love everything about the Fairgrounds – and I love that Tall Pines is such a part of the Fairgrounds,” said Debby. “I’m surprised and overwhelmed to receive this award, and I feel very fortunate to be able to work in such a beautiful location, with the families and children I serve, and among the Fair team.”

“Debby is truly one of the Fair’s best friends,” said Sandy Woods, CEO of the Fairgrounds. “She has a deep love for the Fairgrounds and she passes that passion on to her little students. She is one of the guardians of California’s Most Beautiful Fairgrounds and is very protective of the facility. She is held in very high esteem by the entire Fair staff and we consider her part of the Fair family. We are thrilled to be able to honor her with this industry award.”

Debby was recognized in a surprise presentation at the Fair’s Opening Ceremonies on Wednesday, August 7.

Nevada County Fair Competition Handbook Now Available

Winner of the 10th annual Gingerbread House Competition at the Country Christmas Faire Best of Show winner Wanda Dunn of Penn Valley
Winner of the 10th annual Gingerbread House Competition at the Country Christmas Faire Best of Show winner Wanda Dunn of Penn Valley

Book includes all the information you need to enter exhibits in this year’s Fair

The Nevada County Fair’s Competition Handbook, which includes all the information you need to enter exhibits in this year’s Fair, is now available. If you can make it, bake it, grow it or show it, there is a category for you – and it can be found in the Competition Handbook!

Why not showcase a talent, a project, a cooking skill, or a special collection. Try one of the traditional categories like baking cookies or entering a prized photo; or one of the specialty contests designed specifically for this year’s Fair theme of “Under the Big Top,” like creating a circus train car out of a shoe box.  Or, enter one of the specialty food contests for adults – held each day of the Fair. There are also lots of special contests like the Squash Mobile Races, Rain Gutter Regatta, and the Idol Competition. The Competition Handbook is filled with hundreds of categories for children and adults.

Copies of the free handbook are available at the Fairgrounds’ Office, Chamber of Commerce offices, county libraries, Raley’s, or on-line at www.NevadaCountyFair.com.

It’s easy to enter! Look through the book, pick your favorite categories, and follow the simple steps for completing the entry forms. You can even enter on-line at www.NevadaCountyFair.com.   This year, there won’t be any entry fees for most categories (yes, it’s free!), you can enter on-line or at the Fair office, and there will be some great prizes!  The deadline for submitting paper entry forms and on-line entries is July 19 at 4 pm.

This year’s Competition Handbook also contains information about discounted Fair tickets available now through August 6, discount days at the Fair, and nightly arena events.

The 2013 Nevada County Fair is August 7 – 11. For more information, visit www.NevadaCountyFair.com or call (530) 273-6217. You can also follow the Fairgrounds on Facebook at “Nevada County Fairgrounds.”

Nevada County Rotary Huge Success at Nevada County Fairgrounds

More than 180 volunteers participated in the Rotary at Work Day at the Nevada County Fairgrounds on Saturday. Organized by Nevada County’s Rotary Clubs, volunteers spent the day fixing up and sprucing up the community’s Fairgrounds.

More than 180 volunteers participated in the Rotary at Work Day at the Nevada County Fairgrounds on Saturday. Organized by Nevada County’s Rotary Clubs, volunteers spent the day fixing up and sprucing up the community’s Fairgrounds.

More than 180 volunteers spend a day “beautifying” the Nevada County Fairgrounds

On Saturday, Nevada County’s Rotary Clubs – Grass Valley Rotary, Nevada City Rotary, Nevada City 49er Breakfast Rotary, Penn Valley Rotary, and South Nevada County Rotary – joined together for the second year for the Rotary at Work Day at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. Local contractors and volunteers from Bear River FFA, NU FFA, Sierra College Volunteer Club, Interact Club from Lyman Gilmore and Seven Hills, and Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, also participated in the event, which amounted to more than 180 individuals volunteering their time and efforts to perform much-needed repairs and maintenance at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

The volunteers worked hard staining fences, replacing roofs, laying concrete, painting barns, planting trees, removing decking and raking the grounds.  They also replaced a dilapidated billboard that faced Highway 20 with a new billboard that includes the Fairgrounds logo.

In addition to the volunteer efforts, there were numerous contractors and suppliers who donated goods and services – Waste Management, Caseywood, Earley Concrete Pumping, BP Landscaping, C & D Construction, Hanson Bros., Viking Roofing, DMCE Concrete, Moule Paint and Glass, Grass Valley Signs, and JSM Construction.

“The work completed at the Fairgrounds this weekend, and at last year’s Rotary at Work Day, serve as another reminder of the ongoing support and generosity of our community,” said Sandy Woods, CEO of the Nevada County Fairgrounds. “We are so grateful to the Rotarians for organizing this yearly event, and we thank all the volunteers and businesses for their efforts in ensuring that the Fairgrounds remain beautiful and a source of pride for our community.”

“It was an amazing day filled with so much enthusiasm for the work at hand,” said Scott Spencer, organizer of the event. “We aimed high this year – and we met our goals! It is amazing what can be accomplished when a large group works together for a common goal. A special thank you goes to the Nevada County Fairgrounds’ maintenance crew for all their work in preparing for the Rotary at Work Day, and for going above and beyond the call of duty to accommodate the various needs for this event. It truly was a team effort.”

With 180 volunteers at this year’s Rotary at Work Day, and more than 200 at last year’s event, this event continues to be the largest one-day community service project conducted in the county.
