Local Nevada City Song Artist Makes Internet History With 365 Songs In 365 Days

httpv://youtu.be/jawOarugkgI

Chris Crockett began creating songs at age 13 and has a compilation of hundreds of songs written throughout his life. Chris is the 3rd generation of the Crockett Family Kentucky Mountaineers, musicians who were instrumental in bringing country music to California.

Chris was born in Los Angeles, California. In the early 1960’s Chris coaxed his brothers Joel and Jeremy Crockett to form The Crockett Brothers trio. During the Crockett Brothers era Chris and the boys recorded two classic surfing/hot rod songs, “Mother Mother May I Go Surfing” and “Fastest Car In Town”. Both songs are highly prized by collectors on 45 rpm, and have recently been re-released on CD by Del-Fi/Donna Records , the label which originally recorded these two classics.

Chris is a lifetime member of the National Academy of Recording Artists and Sciences (NARAS), the organization that votes for the Grammys, and a member of the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI). He has had several published songs and has written for major artists, motion pictures, independent artists and commercials. In 1975, Chris became a staff writer for music publisher Snuff Garrett (Garrett Music Enterprises, Inc.) During that time, he wrote songs recorded and performed by artists including Brenda Lee, Larry Mahan, Donnie Brooks, Susie Allenson and several others.

In 2001, Chris made internet history with his “365 songs in 365 days” project, in which he uploaded a new song he had written every day from January 1 through December 31, 2001, completing a total of 365 original compositions and releasing 26 CDs each with 14 original songs. The 365/365 CDs are out of print, but you can download Chris’ newest album “Stranger In This Land” from ITunes, Rhapsody, Amazon, CDBaby as well as most other music sites.

The first single from the album is “Land Of Nod”, and can be viewed on the following link: Nevadacounty.com

Also, Chris’ comedy motorcycle song “You’re the One Who Made Me Sell My Bike” has been in the top 3 of YouTube’s top 10 Motorcycle Songs for 6 months, and can be seen at this link: Nevadacounty.com

Since 1979, Chris has been performing in Nevada City and Grass Valley at venues including The National Hotel (7 years), Main Street Bar and Grill, Holbrooke Hotel, Friar Tucks, The Owl Tavern, and venues from the past such as The Coach House (with “Rock of Ages”), Jolly Roger Lanes (“The Dead Cowboys”). He is a railroad minstrel on “The Snow Train” which travels from Emeryville to Reno during January, February and March. Chris also warms up the crowd every Friday and Saturday night before the plays at Off Broad Street Theater in Nevada City, and performs in several musical comedy plays every year at that theater.

Chris’ comedy motorcycle song “You’re the One Who Made Me Sell My Bike” has been in the top 3 of YouTube’s top 10 Motorcycle Songs for 6 months.

Of course, you have to listen to the song to find out why he had to sell his bike.  A short bio furnished to me by Chris:

I’ve always enjoyed listening to Chris wherever and when ever I get a chance to hear him play in Grass Valley  or  Nevada City. He has a great voice and this is one of his latest videos he posted on Facebook. Here’s  what he has to say about himself on his website:

Local thespians to dazzle the audience with classic country music of Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline and Dolly Parton

Spectators at this weekend’s Draft Horse Classic will enjoy special musical entertainment provided by local performers Chris Crockett, Kris Stepanian, and Nancy Keith. Throughout the evening performances and at Sunday’s late afternoon performance, this dynamic trio will dazzle the audiences with the classic country music of Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline and Dolly Parton.

These three talented performers are regulars at Off Broadstreet Theatre in Nevada City and each have their own special charm.  Chris Crockett, performing as Willie Nelson, is a singer, songwriter and actor, and has performed all over the United States. Nancy Keith, performing as Dolly Parton, is an actress who has won numerous awards for her acting talent. Kris Stepanian, performing as Patsy Cline, is an award winning vocalist, and has performed as both a vocalist and an actress throughout California and Nevada.

Additional entertainment can be found at the Harvest Fair, which takes place at the Fairgrounds during all four days of the Classic. Enjoy Bluegrass, Western & ‘Old-Time’ music, cowboy poetry, and stories of the old west. These toe-tapping, hand-clapping, crowd-pleasing performances take place on the Pine Tree Stage, beneath the shady tall trees where you can sit a spell and take in the show.  This year’s local performers include Sidewinder, a Western Swing band; Sourdough Slim, a yodeling cowboy comic and songster; Buffalo Gals, a good-time string band; Larry Ilg, a cowboy poet; Bill Schultz, a cowboy poet; and the Chillbillies, a rockabilly /country surf band. These performers will be entertaining throughout the weekend on the Pine Tree Stage at the Fairgrounds. Visit www.NevadaCountyFair.com for a schedule.

The Draft Horse Classic and Harvest Fair starts Thursday and runs through Sunday, September 25 at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley. While there is a charge for Draft Horse performance tickets, admission to the Fairgrounds is free for the Harvest Fair activities.  In addition to live entertainment, there is a world class art show, Treat Street goodies, vendors with western wear and items, a clogging jamboree, a live shoeing competition, community exhibits, and barn visits.

For Draft Horse Classic performance tickets, call the Fair office at 530-273-6217 or stop by the Arena box office. Visit www.NevadaCountyFair.com for additional information.

Sista Monica with Lorraine Gervais Coming to Grass Valley

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ztPXBBxG28

Sista Monica & Her All-Star Band with Lorraine Gervais & the Burning Sensations are coming to the Center for the Arts in Grass Valley on Saturday  March 5 at 8 pm.  Tickets are $20 and their music is soul, blues, gospel along with a dance party!

In 2001, she released her first gospel album, Gimme That Old Time Religion, an artistic full circle for her, as she returned to the gospel roots of her youth. That same year, she released Live in Europe, which captures the spirit and energy of her live performances with her touring band. It was on tour in Europe in the late ’90s that she first got the moniker “the Blues Lioness.” In 2002, she was presented with the Blues Artist of the Year award at the 17th annual Monterey Bay Blues Festival. After completing a 17-concert tour of the Netherlands in late 2002, she discovered a lump under her right arm and later found out it was a rare and severe form of cancer, synovial sarcoma. Parker underwent more than a year of chemotherapy, radiation treatments, and physical therapy, always affirming herself and holding onto her faith in God and her will to live.

In 2004, she re-emerged on the scene and recorded an album of soul and jazz standards popularized by Ray Charles and Dinah Washington, Love, Soul & Spirit, Vol. 1. Her latest release, Can’t Keep a Good Woman Down!, showcases her abilities as a blues and classic R&B vocalist, but also includes some well-chosen covers, including Willie Nelson’s Funny How Time Slips Away and Sam Cooke’s A Change Gonna Come. Can’t Keep a Good Woman Down! reflects her new perspective on life, reaffirms her faith in God, and casts new meaning on the healing powers of blues and gospel music. Not only is she one of today’s most powerful singers of blues, gospel, classic R&B, and soul, she’s also a cancer survivor. As of late 2008 and early 2009, Parker continues to tour around the U.S. and parts of Europe.

As in years past, Dan, the Licks, and the Hot Licks will don their jingle bells and Santa hats for another season of holiday fun. This year, the crew has a special treat for your Christmas stocking, a new recording, “Crazy for Christmas”. Included are seven original tunes, along with Dan’s unique twist on traditional favorites like “Here Comes Santa Claus,” “Run Rudolph Run,” and a scat version of “Carol of the Bells”. There will also be plenty of other slightly off-kilter (but never off-key) material from a singer-songwriter who’s a true American original.

Beginning as a drummer in the seminal 60’s San Francisco rock band The Charlatans, and continuing with his unique and legendary Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks, Dan Hicks is widely acknowledged as one of the defining figures in American roots music. Having earned a reputation as a true original with his signature eclecticism and humor, Hicks continues to carve his way through a number of genres from proto-psychedelia to western swing and jazz, from tin pan alley to country blues — all the while cultivating his own unique sound. The original Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks recorded five ground-breaking and Billboard-charting records for the Columbia, Blue Thumb and Warner Bros. labels. They toured worldwide, and Dan appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine three times.
