Scotts Flat Reservoir

Pictures  by John J. O’Dell from my deck.

The water level in the lake is down further than I’ve seen since I’ve lived in Cascade Shores, or at least it seems that way.  Scotts Flat Lake or should I say reservoir, what’s the difference?  A lake is a body of water but a  reservoir is different because it’s level is deepest at the dam and some other technicalities . Oh, well, I still like to call it a lake.  If you really want to know the difference between a lake and reservoir go to Lakes & Reservoirs.

If you want to see the projected water level for Scotts Flat Reservoir  that was prepared by Nevada Irrigation District, go to picture 5.  I’m guessing from my pictures and the graph for water levels for Scotts Flat Lake that the present elevation is around 3,036 foot elevation. The high appears to be 3,062  feet in elevation.  That’s a 26 foot drop which cuts the water storage in half, from 40,000 acre feet to 25,000 acre feet. An acre foot is one foot of water over one acre of land or 43,560 cubic feet of water.

Scott’s Flat is situated among the tall pines at the 3100-foot elevation nine miles east of Nevada City via Highway 20 and Scott’s Flat Road. It offers 169 campsites at two large campgrounds, plus a group camp. Across the lake, accessible via Red Dog and Quaker Hill Roads from Nevada City, is the Cascade Shores Day Use Area. As you can see from my pictures, there a lot of trees around the reservoirs, oops lake.

The smoke over Scotts Flat Lake was even worse this morning than yesterday.  I was smart enough to close my sliding glass doors and turn on the air conditioner during the night. Some of my friends living in Grass Valley  left their windows open and woke up to puffed eyes and sore throats.

The American fire is burning in heavy fuels on very steep slopes. The heavy fuels are creating large amounts of smoke The fire is located about 17 miles northeast of Foresthill in the Tahoe National Forest. Access to the fire is limited adding to the difficulty in fighting this fire. Firefighter safety is a concern.

Fire size is estimated at 1750 acres. The fire has burned across the North Fork Middle Fork American River and is burning both up and down the river drainage. The fire is being actively fought both directly and indirectly.

Multiple Forest Service and Cal Fire personnel are assigned to the fire. Currently 318 resources have been assigned including 18 crews, 16 engines, 4 helicopters, 5 dozers, 4 watertenders, and air tankers as available.

The Central Coast #7 Type II Incident Management Team has assumed managment of the fire.

Smoke is expected to impact Foresthill, Auburn, Nevada City, the valley and other areas for several days.

Scotts Flat Lake, Nevada County, Winter 2010

I just recently bought a Canon Hf200 camcorder.  The last video camera I had must have weighed 30 pounds (just kidding). The Canon HF200 weighs less than one pound and is small enough to carry in my jacket pocket.

The Canon HF200 has 15X optical zoom, optical image stabilization and can record in full HD and outputs at 1920×1080. This is my first fully edited video and I am still learning the software that I just bought. If you are interested in the full specs for the Canon HF200 Click Here

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htW7RpS67d4

This video was shot during several periods this winter. Looking out from my deck, the lake is constantly changing  appearance,  even in the summer when the wind plays on the water and sail boats float like toys in a bathtub.

You can download a lot of video editing software for a free thirty day trial. I read all the reviews and tried about 4 different software packages and finally settled with Corel VideoStudio Pro X3. If you read the reviews online it will drive you nuts. All of the reviews seem to have horrible stories about their computers crashing and the programs freezing.

I had none of the problems with any of the software packages that I tried. Corel’s program can read my memory card from the camcorder which the other programs could not. It’s a fairly easy program to learn if you play around with it for a while. There are also a lot of tutorial videos on YouTube which really helped. After editing the video, I was able to download it to YouTube, which is part of the software. If you are interested in the specs for Corel VideoStudio Pro X3 Click Here

Anyhow, this is my first try and it is not as seamless as I wanted, but it’s a start. I hope you enjoy it and any comments you might have on how to improve the beginning of my movie career would be appreciated.

Snow in Nevada County December 7, 2009

Scotts Flat Lake about 8 am this morning December 7, 2009 (from my deck)
Scotts Flat Lake about 8 am this morning December 7, 2009 (from my deck)

We’ve finally had a real snow fall in Nevada County last night and early this morning. We’ve also had the power go out in Cascade Shores, (where I live), last night for about 4 hours.

I measured the amount of snowfall this morning on my back deck after it stopped snowing and it came in at 11 inches. The pictures tell the rest of the story.

Fog over Scotts Flat Lake 1

November 15, 2009

I took this picture from my deck yesterday looking at Scotts Flat Lake. It has its own eco-system and generates a fog over itself. The nice thing is my house is at 3,700 elevation and the fog usually never gets all the way up here.  Wish I could say the same thing about snow sometimes.

A couple of weeks ago I saw a black bear scooting across the road at 8:30 at night. Fortunately, he just crossed the road and we missed each other. Not so fortunately for my son, he was traveling along the same road and hit a black bear a couple of days ago.  He doesn’t how badly hurt the bear was, but he has a large dent on the left side of his car. I’ve heard that there has been a high rate of deaths of deers and bears this year from car accidents, be careful, espcially at night.

If you have been reading my blogs, you know that I bought out my franchise and am no longer Realty World, The O’Dell Realty Group.  I’ve gone back to O’Dell Realty. It sounds simple, but I’ve had to order new signs, inform the Department of Real Estate, change checking accounts and it goes on. This coming week everything will be in order and I’m back to your local home town realty.

In other news, California Land Title Company, in business in Nevada County for thirty eight years closed its doors Friday.  The recession has affected all of the title companies, downsizing their offices and the number of employees.

My house overlooks Scotts Flat Lake and as you can see in the picture above, I get a really beautiful view of the lake . It’s a wonderful experience living above such a body of water, which is constantly changing appearance, either due to wind or other forces of nature. At times I can look out and see fog completely covering the lake, at other times; wind plays with the water and makes designs that are captivating to the eye and imagination. The lake is large enough for fairly large sail boats (my daughter had a 25 foot long sail boat that she sailed on the lake and there are  larger sail boats that use the lake), along with ski boats, canoes and small boats for fishing.

Scotts Flat Lake is at 3,100 feet in elevation and has a surface area of 850 acres with 7.5 miles of shoreline lined with a forest of pine trees. There are two launch ramps, a marina, campsites, a picnic area, sandy beaches and a general store. (My house is at 3,700 foot elevation.)

The fish in the lake are German Brown Trout, Massachusetts Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Kokanee, Large Mouth Bass, Small Mouth Bass, Bullhead Catfish and Channel Catfish. There are sites that are available for camping at Gate 1 with nightly single sites, and (1) one hundred person group site, Gate 2 has seventy five single sites and three group sites, one hosts twenty, one hosts thirty and  the third one hosts forty people.

Showers and flush toilets are available, along with multiple RV sites, but no RV hookupsare available. However, they do have dumping facilities for RV’s. You can bring pets, however they must be leashed at all times and they are not allowed along the beach or swim areas.

Below Scotts Flat Lake is Lower Scotts Flat, also called Deer Creek Reservoir which is much smaller than the upper lake. The only water craft I’ve seen here are mainly canoes and a few small boats for fishing.

Scotts Flat Lake Feburary 2009
Scotts Flat Lake Feburary 2009

There was a nice blanket of snow which fell last night at my house. I would guess that there was a little over one foot of snow which made everything outside look like a winter wonder land. My house is located in Cascade Shores about 11 miles from Nevada City and at an elevation of 3,700 feet.

From my house you can overlook Scotts Flat Lake and notice that the water level is very low. It is normal for the lake not to be full this time of the year, but it is lower then normal. In January according to Susan Sindt, of the Nevada Irrigation District, the level of the lake was 31,000 acre feet. (An acre foot is one acre filled one with water one foot deep). We have gained some benefits from the recent rains, since the water level has gone from 31,000 acre feet in January to 32,200 acre feet as of today, according to Susan.

The last time the lake was lower was in the 1988-89 season at which time the water level was at 30,000 acre feet. Susan also said that NID’s overall water supply for the district is at 87 percent of normal for this time of the year. Hopefully we’ll get a lot rain this winter-spring season and the water supply will get back to normal.
